What in the world is the purpose of this? Pets already have unreliable damage, and this decreases it?

It reduces the damage your pets take, not the damage they deal.

Going off of the description, I'd GUESS that unlike some other skills, it's applied prior to armor bonuses and other damage reductions.

Like, 50 damage with a 20 point damage reduction CoP would deal 30 damage to a 60 AL pet, and 50 damage with a 20 point damage reduction CoP would deal 15 damage to a 100 AL pet (as opposed to 5 damage with a 20 point reduction Shielding Hands). But, since there's no pet feedback, I couldn't really say the actuality.

Why does it say "your animal companionS"? Why is it plural? Does this affect every pet in the party?

I have no idea. The three pet shouts, with the way they are worded, should affect all allied pets. However, Call of Haste and Call of Protection only affect the caster's pet, and Otyugh's Cry affects all animals in the area (meaning it affects enemy pets as well as allied pets and neutral animals).

It does nothing to other animal companions beside yours. Still a must have for any beastmaster. The pet lives so much longer with that
